(Jefferson City, MO: July 8, 2024) – Last month marked the launch of an innovative program aimed at supporting children residing in a local domestic violence shelter. Rape & Abuse Crisis Service (RACS) announces the introduction of a specialized children’s program designed to provide a nurturing and healing environment for young survivors of domestic violence.

The new program, titled “Healing Hearts,” is a testament to RACS’ commitment to holistic care and support for families affected by domestic violence. With a focus on the unique needs of children who have experienced trauma, Healing Hearts offers a safe space where children can express themselves, process their emotions, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

“At RACS, we understand the profound impact that domestic violence can have on children,” said Angela Hirsch, Executive Director of RACS.  “Healing Hearts is not just a program; it’s a lifeline for these young survivors. Through therapeutic activities, early childhood educational opportunities, and one-on-one guidance, we aim to empower children to heal, thrive, and reclaim their sense of security.”

Healing Hearts will feature a range of age-appropriate activities tailored to the needs and interests of children, including art therapy, play therapy, storytelling sessions, and mindfulness exercises. Additionally, the program will offer early childhood educational opportunities and workshops for older children on topics such as healthy relationships, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution to equip children with essential life skills.

The launch of Healing Hearts underscores the critical role that trauma-informed care plays in breaking the cycle of violence and fostering resilience among young survivors. By addressing the unique needs of children in domestic violence situations, RACS aims to create a supportive community where families can heal together and envision a future free from violence.

“We believe that every child deserves to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment,” said Hirsch. “Through Healing Hearts, we are not only providing essential support to children impacted by domestic violence but also laying the foundation for a brighter tomorrow.”

The launch of the Healing Hearts program is made possible through the generous support of numerous donors including Mid America Bank, Natalie Diemler, and a generous anonymous donor. RACS extends its heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to this vital initiative.
